Designer Matthew Lerch of Sussex, WI has practiced jewelry making and watchmaking, and he has also made a serious name for himself as a custom knifemaker. His recent challenge was to design the Flat Out™. In CRKT’s version, the striking profile starts with a very slim 3-1⁄2″ spearpoint blade of 8Cr13MoV stainless at 58-60 Rc., which is balanced by a highly ergonomic and shapely handle. Subtle details like a two-tone satin finish on the blade and bead blast finish on the handle add to the visual appeal. But in motion is where the Flat Out™ truly shines—open it a mere 30 degrees and OutBurst deploys the blade at a lightening quick speed. A frame-lock keeps the open blade solidly in place.
