Very few of us will ever get paid to fire a 5.56×45 rifle. But that’s all right. Thanks to IMI Systems (formerly Israel Military Industries), anyone can buy the same 5.56×45 ammunition that professionals would use!
This ammunition is specifically designed for professional snipers. Now, don’t interpret that the wrong way. Although it does appear to have a hollow point nose cavity, this round’s 77 grain open tip match bullet is not designed to exhibit terminal expansion. As such its performance suboptimal for home defense (where sniping skills shouldn’t come into play anyway), and it really isn’t suited for hunting anything larger than rodents (and maybe boar if you’re really sure of your aim).
The OTM is exclusively engineered for accuracy – the facet of performance snipers rely on to do their best work. The bullet starts out as a thin and concentric copper jacket. The hollow shell is then filled with liquid lead, which settles into place as it hardens so as to create a voidless and rotationally stable core. And because this round’s bullet is 40% heavier than a standard M193 load’s, it has higher inertia and greater resistance to wind deflection as a result.
You are looking at brand new, noncorrosive, brass-cased and reloadable ammunition. The cases’ discoloration around their necks is merely the byproduct of the annealing process. Commercial 5.56 brass cases would have the same discoloration if they weren’t polished for better cosmetics. Military grade brass cases are left unpolished as proof that they were manufactured correctly.
